Here are some of the Frequently Asked Questions about Aspire:
What is Aspire? Aspire is a federally funded Out-of-School learning program delivered in partnership between Shelby Public Schools and the American Youth Foundation. 

Who can attend Aspire? Aspire offers after-school  programming for all students in Shelby Public Schools in grades 1-12.

Where does Aspire programming happen? Aspire programming takes place in Thomas Reed Elementary, New Era Elementary, Shelby Middle School and Shelby High School. A good portion of programming also takes place at Camp Miniwanca on Lake Michigan.

When does Aspire programming happen? Aspire programming begins immediately after each building's dismissal until 6p. Programming will start for the 2010-2011 school year on September 27th, 2010. It will run for 32 weeks during the school year and 6 weeks during the summer. 

How do students apply for Aspire? Applications are available at each school, are mailed to the students and are available for download in the forms section above. With the application, parents must completely fill out a Child Contract that is used for emergencies and any communication with the family. Applications are received on a rolling basis and are enrolled first come, first served. Families will be notified of acceptance into the program upon completion of the application. A waiting list will be maintained. 

Does Aspire cost anything? No. Aspire provides all programming free of charge through the 21st Century Community Learning Center grant. 

What happens at Aspire? Aspire conducts an after-school program following federal regulations that includes: enrichment activities, collaborative learning projects, structured "play" time, homework help, and a nutritious supper. Each student's progress toward their individual academic and personal goals in monitored by professional staff, who participate in professional development in the field of Out-of-School time learning. 

What do they eat for supper? All snacks and meals are prepared and delivered by The American Youth Foundation - Camp Miniwanca. All meals are prepared fresh and as much as possible, include produce from local farmers and businesses. 

How do they get home? Bus transportation is provided by the Shelby Public Schools but children may also be picked up at Shelby Middle School at 6p or they can walk home if their parent/guardian requests. 

What do parents contribute? We would like all parents to partner with the school district, the American Youth Foundation, and Aspire staff in creating a total learning environment that teaches and inspires all students to discover there Best Self and increase academic achievement.
